Why Does the Electromagnetic Flowmeter Transmitter Fill with Moisture, Darken or Even Blacken? Do Not Only Focus on IP Rating — Check Condensation Paths and Display Area Encapsulation First
When an electromagnetic flowmeter transmitter suffers from water ingress, darkening, abnormal display or local blackening, it should not simply be attributed to insufficient enclosure waterproof rating. It is critical to examine moisture migration and condensation after vapour enters via cable entries and housing joints, as well as whether the display zone features continuous, low-stress transparent encapsulation protection. If there are no obvious damp traces, further inspection of the LCD, drive circuits and connecting structures is required. Not all display failures can be blamed on potting materials. Electromagnetic flowmeters are commonly installed on industrial pipelines, water supply systems, sewage treatment facilities and outdoor metering sites. Although the transmitters are not in direct contact with pipeline media, they are constantly exposed to high humidity, day-night temperature swings, rainfall, washing and internal temperature fluctuations inside the housing. Many units pass short-duration rain spray tests but develop vapour fogging or display faults inside the display window after several months of operation. The root cause lies in the difference between short-term waterproof performance and long-term moisture resistance. Why Can Moisture Still Build Up Inside Even If IP Testing Is Passed? IP protection mainly evaluates resistance against liquid water and solid foreign objects under specified test conditions. Real outdoor service environments involve prolonged thermal cycling. The enclosure heats up under sunlight or internal circuit heat during daytime and cools rapidly at night, continuously altering the state of internal air. Tiny vapour passages at cable glands, cover seals, harness inlets or other gaps allow moist air to seep in slowly. When the temperature of a local zone inside the transmitter drops to the dew point, vapour tends to condense preferentially on the display cover plate, PCB or metal structures. Therefore, the absence of visible leakage marks externally does not rule out long-term moisture migration internally. Why Is…
